The winners of the Global Coding Challenge 2021 are from Nepal: Bibek Panthi & Atish Shah Rouniyar

These are Bibek Panthi(left) and Atish Shah Rouniyar(right), students from Pulchowk Engineering Campus. And these coding geniuses are the winners of the Global Coding Championship 2021 from the "rest of the world category".

About Global Coding Challenge 2021

The Global Coding Challenge(GCC) is an online coding competition where thousands of participants across the globe battle with their coding knowledge. They compete to obtain the correct and fastest coding solution to nine coding problems. The participants compete to secure a global title and seven regional titles from their respective regions. This challenge has been entirely designed, built and run by Credit Suisse TAs. (Trust Administration Services), an international bank from Switzerland.

This year, the competition was registered by 23000+ individuals. All participants worked relentlessly for 18 days to create solutions to those same nine problems. And those who make it correct, as well as the fastest running program, are crowned the winner. So you can imagine there was enormous competition among the participants. Amidst such a group of elite coders, being the winner is a huge achievement for Bibek and Atish. What's more miraculous is that Atish had been the winner of GCC in 2020 as well from the same category.

About the winners:

Hailing from Gulmi, Bibek Panthi completed his SLC from Siddhartha EBS, Shankarnagar, Rupandehi. He received his +2 from Tilottama college.

Bibek loves understanding/untangling systems that are simple and logically consistent at their base but have abstractions upon abstractions built in them. And math, physics and computer science fit this description. This was his motivation to pursue engineering. It might surprise you to know that Bibek is actually a civil engineer from Pulchowk Campus. Despite his field being far from coding, he learned it all by himself. Why? Because he enjoys learning about computer programming and AI.

With passion and determination, his coding skills now excels any computer engineer or IT personnel.

Atish Shah Rouniyar also had humble beginnings. Born in biratnagar, he completed his SLC from peace zone awasiya mavi, itahari. He received his +2 from Shikshadeep Boarding Secondary School, Biratnagar, Morang. He is currently pursuing computer engineering from the Pulchowk campus.

For Atish, coding wasn't his burning passion from childhood. Only after joining computer engineering, he got to spread his wings in the full arena of computer programming. As coding presented him with challenges, it gave him the kick to solve them more and more. This fruitful cycle pushed him ever more forward to excel at coding.

While exploring his interest, he realized how underdeveloped Nepal's IT sector was. Now, he has made his sole mission to improve the IT sector to great heights.

For the winners, GCC will award them with an iPhone, smartwatch and many other goodies.

This extraordinary achievement is the moment of pride for every Nepalese coding aspirant. They have proved that the notion of Nepalese being underskilled manpower, is just a mindset we made up.

When we asked them about the wisdom they would like to share with younger coders, they shared a few words that reflected the philosophy they are currently living by. Here are some life lessons from their own words:

Bibek:

Do what you love to do with all sincerity and energy. Don't shy from a good problem, and always try to get to the bottom of things. Surely, it will take time but that will be more than compensated in the future. Because understanding of the fundamentals has an exponential-like effect in further pursuit of knowledge.

Atish:

I have heard from many people who are hesitant to participate in such competitive contests, telling themselves that they need to practice first. But this is the wrong approach, as learning without experiencing first-hand is less effective. Rather apply for the competition and learn along the way, search for ways to apply your knowledge in real-time and undergo a much fruitful experience.
